Burnham Sailing Club
Although there were great facilities for
yachtsmen on the River Crouch in Burnham yachting was very elitist and
the paid crew and professionals were not allowed to join the Yacht
Racing Association or take part in any of its races in their own right
although they could compete with a member as paid crew.
In 1930 a
group of local marine professionals and paid crew members formed
a club to organise their own dinghy races. This proved so successful
that in 1935 they were able to construct their own clubhouse
As time went on rules about participation were
relaxed but Burnham Sailing Club had become a strong unit for dinghy
sailors providing many national champions.
Although some members own larger yachts many
members still enjoy sailing in dinghies creating flashes of colour on
the River when they leave the club pontoon which entertain visitors
enjoying a stroll on the Quay.
The club has a particularly strong
cadet section
with large numbers of young people sailing lasers and other dinghies.
